Carmine Agnello, the grandson of former organized crime leader John Gotti, is headed to prison following his involvement in a financial scheme. Federal Judge Nusrat Choudhury sentenced the 39-year-old to 15 months in prison on Monday for his role in an illicit operation valued at $1.1 million. The sentence, delivered in a Long Island federal court, also requires Agnello to pay $1.268 million in restitution and complete 100 hours of community service.
The case highlights a direct overlap between pandemic relief exploitation and digital assets. Agnello pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining funds through the Small Business Administration’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program. He secured the loans on behalf of his Smithtown-based company, Crown Auto Parts & Recycling LLC.
According to court records, the company had ceased operations prior to the disbursement of the bulk of the funds.
Crypto Investment and Enforcement Action
Authorities identified that Agnello diverted a significant portion of the pandemic relief capital into digital assets. Prosecutors stated that Agnello utilized the loans “for his personal use, including by investing approximately $420,000 in a cryptocurrency business.”
During the legal proceedings, the defense framed the cryptocurrency allocation as a byproduct of a gambling addiction rather than calculated financial enrichment. The court subsequently ordered Agnello to undergo mental health treatment alongside his penal sentence and a two-year supervised release period.
Law enforcement agencies continue to process criminal cases from the pandemic era. The conviction underscores the ongoing prosecution of individuals who integrated cryptocurrency into traditional fraud mechanisms. Agnello is scheduled to begin his 15-month sentence on July 20.
